Beginnings
Coffee was first introducted to Thailand in the early 20th centruy. In the 1970s, Coffee growing was promoted as an alternative to opium farming in the golden triangle.
Arabica & Robusta
Arabica thrived in the cool, high-altitude north, namely Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai. Robusta flourished in the humid, lowland south, namely Chumphon and Surat Thani.
Coffee Culture
In Thailand, traditional drinks like Oliang used dark roasts, but in the late 1990s modern cafes boomed as Thai youths embraced espresso and specialty coffee.
Specialty Coffee
In the past 15 years, Thai coffee has gained global recognition for its fruity, floral, and nutty notes, with northern farmers driving innovation and fueling a vibrant local culture.
