How to brew French Pressed coffee | Wai Roasters

Brewing a french pressed coffee with a wooden top, using a white gooseneck kettle

Introduction

The French press is a manual coffee brewing method loved for its rich, full-bodied flavor and time efficiency. By steeping coarsely ground coffee in hot water for just a few minutes and pressing a plunger to separate the grounds, you retain the coffee’s natural oils and fine particles, producing a bold, aromatic cup quickly.

Our Guide

Dose: 16 g coffee

Yield: 250 g water

Grind: Coarse

Steep time: 4 minutes

Ratio: 1:~16

Work Flow

  • Pour a small amount of hot water (90–96 °C) over the coffee grounds. Let bloom for 30–45 seconds to release CO₂.

  • Pour the remaining hot water evenly over the grounds.

  • Let coffee steep for 4 minutes.

  • Gently press the plunger down to separate the grounds. Pressing slowly avoids turbulence, over-extraction, and keeps the cup smooth.

  • Serve immediately to enjoy a full-bodied, aromatic coffee.

Recommendations

French press coffee works best with medium to dark roasts, using a coarse grind. This produces a full-bodied, rich, and aromatic cup, allowing natural oils and fine particles to remain for bold, smooth flavor with low acidity. It’s also time-efficient and hands-off, brewing a satisfying cup in just a few minutes without the need for complicated equipment.
