Introduction

Moka pot coffee is a classic stovetop brewing method that produces a strong, rich, and aromatic coffee, and is considered the closest brew type to espresso. Using steam pressure, hot water is forced through finely ground coffee, extracting bold flavors and natural oils for a full-bodied cup. Compact, affordable, and easy to use, the Moka pot is perfect for coffee lovers who enjoy intense, espresso-like coffee at home without needing an espresso machine.

Our Guide

Coffee: 18 g (adjust based on your Moka pot size)

Water: Fill the bottom chamber up to the safety valve

Ratio: Roughly 1:7–1:8

Grind Size: Fine (Slightly coarser than espresso)

Work Flow

  1. Pour water up to the safety valve.

  2. Fill the filter basket with finely ground coffee, leveling it without tamping.

  3. Place the filter basket in the bottom chamber and screw the top chamber on securely.

  4. Place the Moka pot on medium heat. Keep the lid open to monitor the brew.

  5. As the water heats, steam pressure forces water through the coffee into the top chamber. You’ll hear a hissing or gurgling sound.

  6. When the top chamber is full and bubbling slows, remove from heat immediately to avoid burning.

  7. Pour and enjoy a rich, espresso-like coffee.

Recommendations

Moka pot coffee works best with medium to dark roasts, offering bold, rich flavors with chocolatey, nutty, or caramel notes. Use a fine grind slightly coarser than espresso to achieve a full-bodied, aromatic cup that’s strong and espresso-like, without needing an espresso machine.
